Additional information

This interview explores the ethics of documentary film making. Perret is the director of the "Visions du Reel" film Festival, Switzerland, which celebrates "visions" of the real rather than content-driven documentary film. The interview questions how documentary filmmakers can respect what Perret calls the "irreducible otherness" of their subjects and avoiding manipulating the ways in which they appear to film audiences. This article was written in collaboration with Truls Lie, editor of DOX magazine, for which Davie has written previously. Davie conducted, transcribed and edited the interview, which formed the reflective heart of a relaunch of the magazine.
