On the jump-up and jump-down frequencies of the Duffing oscillator
Significance of output:
The phenomenon of resonance found throughout the natural and engineered worlds is complicated by sources of nonlinearity. Many nonlinear systems can be described by a cubic restoring force as famously studied by Duffing. Nearly a century later this paper presents new expressions for the jump phenomena exhibited by the Duffing resonator. Amongst its citations Ellerington (see http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/0960-1317/22/3/035019) directly uses a new result from our paper to predict and interpret non-contacting dynamic measurements of MEMS structures obtained by inexpensive and commonly available camera equipment.
