Significance of output:

The Aerospace industry is worth over £28b to the UK annually and its future viability is therefore crucial. In adapting to environmental concerns aircraft manufacturers are considering the re-introduction of counter-rotating propellers (CRP) as such engines give much improved fuel efficiency. Unfortunately they are also inherently noisy and, unless well understood and controlled, this may affect the likelihood of public acceptance. This paper makes a major contribution to understanding the tonal content of CRP noise by developing a theory to account for scattering from the engine nacelle. This is important in predicting far field noise.
