Significance of output:

Fluidised beds are important for energy production so the process must be optimised to enhance future applications. Previous computational fluid dynamics (CFD) attempts only considered hydrodynamics and heat transfer until we previously incorporated chemical reactions to the complex modelling approach (DOI:10.1016/j.cej.2011.01.102). An extensive parametric study demonstrated that variations to the reactor set up and operating conditions were successfully detected by the model and validated with published experimental data. This is the first extensive parametric study to be performed with the implementation of chemical reactions and will enhance reactor optimisation.
