Significance of output:

Space heating and cooling accounts for almost half the UK’s energy use. This can be reduced significantly through use of heat pumps. This paper presents new concepts for the analysis of piled foundations used as heat exchangers in heat pump systems. These ideas are now included within the Ground Source Heat Pump Association Thermal Pile Standard (http://www.gshp.org.uk/pdf/GSHPA_Thermal_Pile_Standard.pdf). [Contact: Duncan Nicholson, Director, Arup & GSHPA Chairman, Duncan.Nicholson@arup.com]. The work forms part of a larger EPSRC funded project “Performance of Ground Energy Systems Installed in Foundations” (£477,744), working with Mott MacDonald, Skanska, Golder Associates and WJ Groundwater Ltd.
