Significance of output:

Positive systems abound in various fields such as biomedicine, pharmacokinetics, ecology, chemical engineering, and even economics. However, well-established analysis and synthesis approaches for general systems may not be applicable to positive systems. In this work, we study observer design and output-feedback control for a class of uncertain positive systems. An interesting finding is that an unstable positive system cannot be positively stabilized by a certain dynamic output-feedback controller without considering the positivity of the error signals. The developed techniques can be applied to practical problems in various areas, e.g., concentration estimation in pharmacokinetics and flow control in networked systems.
