Predicting the earth pressure on integral bridge abutments
Significance of output:
Integral bridges are a form of construction of bridges that greatly reduces the problems of maintenance of bridge bearings and joints. Their widespread adoption has been limited by caution over the pressures exerted on the abutments, particularly for bridges over 60 m in length. This paper reports the culmination of a research programme that demonstrates a methodology by which abutment pressures can be predicted for a wider span range, output from which has been cited in BSI Published Document PD6694-1 (May 2011) which gives the latest recommendations for the design of highway structures in accordance with Eurocodes.
