This paper, undertaken in partnership with international contracting organisation Laing O’Rourke, provides an overview on the understanding of the role of the project manager within the organisation. The results of the research demonstrate that the role of the project manager changes with age and the nature of the roles undertaken with the maturity of the project manager and that the role of the project manager is a concept not fully understood within the construction industry. The research also contradicts what has been suggested by a number of historical authors over the years.
