Simulation of direct shear tests on rooted and non-rooted soil using finite element analysis
In a collaborative effort with several EU institutions (EC grant (GR/S43962/01), Norris et al. (eds) 2008, Springer), soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering concepts were used to model and analyse the behaviour of root-permeated soil under a simulated landslide. The model is a result of previous research plans. For the first time roots and root-soil interface were modelled as structural elements with characteristics and behaviour recorded in-situ. The model was used in the evaluation of root reinforcement in the design of slope stabilisation measures by Jacobs UK Ltd. (See Director of Operations) who plan to use it in the future.
