Additional information

The paper makes a significant contribution to the current knowledge on the performance of polymer modified concrete by presenting previously underestimated effect of superabsorbent polymers in blended cements. The investigation has been supported by the world leading chemical concern BASF Germany (www.basf.com). Most recently the paper has drawn attention of the ScotAsh (www.scotash.com) (a joint venture between Lafarge Tarmac, the UK's leading construction materials company and energy provider ScottishPower). The directions of more extensive research and financial arrangements are currently being negotiated.
