<13>The originality of this paper comes explicitly from the fact that it shows that taking a very simple (indeed the simplest model) for car following along a stretch of road and permitting over-taking can give rise to highly complex behaviour. While previous authors have identified chaotic behaviour in more sophisticated car-following models, this paper gives arguably the simplest physically reasonable model where such behaviour can occur.
