Significance of output:

Globally, deltas are home to 500 million people, or more than 7 per cent of the world’s population. These areas are prone to flooding, and this potential is increasing due to a range of changes. Most obvious is climate-induced sea-level rise and possibly more intense storms. However, this paper shows that other local and catchment effects are currently much more important including loss of land elevation due to subsidence (groundwater pumping), drainage and sediment starvation. The article has been widely cited and is contributing to efforts to promote a Year of Deltas.
