Pulmonary embolism: predicting disease severity.
<28>
A computational model of the pulmonary circulation is applied to predict the impact of embolus occlusions on arterial pressures and the distribution of blood flow. Geometric finite element models of the central blood vessels and emboli were derived from CT data for 10 patients. A volume-filling algorithm was used to describe the geometry of smaller vessels. 1D Poiseuille flow equations were solved within the network.
This paper demonstrates the added benefits of computational tools to understanding clinical problems and will contribute to the acceptance of computational analysis in clinical medicine. An image from this publication was used on the cover.
