Additional information

Despite Granular Computing theory existing for a decade, this paper is the first article worldwide proposing and developing a new data-mining and modelling framework using this theory. Evident impact of this framework includes the model-based evaluation of Friction Stir Welding – for Boeing and Embraer products (TWI UK, Dr Beamish, kathryn.beamish@twi.co.uk) as well as fault detection in steel manufacturing (TATA Steel, Long Products Europe, Dr Thornton, steve.thornton@tatasteel.com). The early concept underpinning this research formed the main part of the international patent PCT/GB2006/001178, which was followed by industry and UK EPSRC (platform grant: EP/E063497/1) funding and this publication.
