Significance of output:
This paper reports a world-record capacity for mode division multiplexed data transmission in an amplified data link. Performed as part of EU FP7 Integrated Project MODEGAP (http://modegap.eu/), and in close collaboration with industrial partners Nokia Siemens Networks (Munich) and OFS (Copenhagen), this research points the way to transmission capacities and spectral efficiencies well beyond the fundamental information theory limits of conventional single mode fibre (100 Terabit/s) and should ultimately lead to cost-effective/energy-efficient petabit/s capable optical fibre communication systems. This work led to numerous plenary and invited talks at leading international conference and drew significant press attention (e.g. http://www.lightwaveonline.com/articles/2012/09/mode-gap-project-makes-progress-in-mode-division-multiplexing.html.)
