Homage to Paderewski
This is an example of a digital release performed and part-curated by the researcher, offering new insights into how an array of diverse composers responded in tribute to the great pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski. It includes first recordings of music commissioned by Boosey and Hawkes in 1942 for an album of piano music of the same name, supplemented by further works dedicated to Paderewski. The collection is stylistically diverse, including a number of works by Paderewski’s students.
By bringing to life these 1942 commissions – and the additional items included on the disc – the researcher offers an original contribution, in and through performance, to our understanding of Paderewski’s legacy. The reach and significance of the impact of this research is indicated by comments in the reviews that accompanied publication: 'a fascinating document’ (BBC Music Magazine); 'a disc that makes a welcome change in being conceived with such imagination. Plowright’s playing throughout is sublime.' (The Daily Telegraph, 5*), and reflected in the awards it has garnered, which include 5 de Diapason (Diapason) and Recording of the Month (Musicweb International).
