Describes the results of experimental measurements of the signals and strategy used by nectar-feeding bats to distinguish different types of flowers from their acoustic signatures. This represents an example of biologically-inspired intelligent, adaptive signal processing which will be key to next-generation radar systems, and also of waveform diversity, which formed the subject of a NATO Lecture Series and led to the NATO SET Panel Excellence Award in 2011. This work was instrumental in an appearance on BBC Radio 4 ‘Material World’ 23 May 2013, and led to an EPSRC CASE Award with THALES UK (PI Griffiths).
