Additional information

Funded by the EPSRC (EP/E020976/1); shows that under dynamic loading the crack closure significantly influences the stress-strain state in the vicinity of the crack tips. This finding started the whole new direction of fracture mechanics leading to reassessing the traditional understanding of strength and fracture of materials under dynamic loading. The output has led to further funding for practical application of the results: a KTP project (KTP008011) with Ziebel UK Ltd.
