Brown and Link were the lead editors for this volume (Ward and Bone took responsibility, respectively, for editing the other two volumes in the series). Brown and Link were solely responsible for co-authoring the 7,000-word introduction. This volume is the first of three edited collections arising from the ‘Understanding the South, Understanding America: The American South in Regional, National and Global Perspectives’ AHRC-funded international network, based in American Studies at Manchester.
