Effect of Molecular Size and Particle Shape on the Terahertz Absorption of a Homologous Series of Tetraalkylammonium Salts
EHL-3: This paper reports the first systematic experimental investigation of molecular size on the terahertz spectrum, supported by quantum mechanical density functional theory calculations. We determined that the phonon modes can couple to the macroscopic field generated by the collective displacement of the vibrating ions, and hence the sample particle shape influences radiation absorption; this understanding is important for translation of terahertz spectroscopy. The work was collaborative with the University of Bradford, University of Bath/RAL, and the Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology, and supported by Burnett’s EPSRC postdoctoral fellowship (EP/I026657, £382,793).
