Additional information

The problem of poor cold idling behaviour of compression ignition engines associated with large cycle-by-cycle variations in indicated work has been overcome through fuel injection strategy and glow plug temperature improvements which achieve a minimum level of premixed combustion, identified as a critical requirement. The results are applied to Ford 2.2 l Puma HPCR diesel engines to improve cold idling quality. (ref. M.Murphy, mmurph20@ford.com)
