Additional information

This paper, selected for a special edition of Sport in Society: Cultures, Commerce, Media, Politics on issues pertaining to inclusion, equity and diversity in sport, aims to develop the nascent literature on co-educational sport settings by analysing the features of martial arts training cultures which facilitate practitioners’ acceptance of sex integration. Exploring the mediated framing, gendered marketing strategies, and pedagogical trends typical among many martial arts disciplines, the paper advocates further exploration of factors underpinning the acceptance of sex integration in other sports training cultures which is, as yet, missing from the literature.
