English abstract

This monograph has three parts: (1) A cultural history of Czech Shakespeare since 1782, the role his work played in forming the culture through different movements and ideologies, reflecting and fostering the aesthetics. The introductory chapter presents an original theoretical model for drama translation. The other chapters present and contextualise individual translator generations; all of the research is based on archival work. (2) An anthology of 21 discovered or rare texts, edited critically from manuscripts. Several of these texts include revision versions and translation variants. (3) A complete bibliography of Czech translations of Shakespeare, including lost and unconfirmed versions.
