Onset of polyspike complexes in a mean-field model of human electroencephalography and its application to absence epilepsy.
<24> The key achievement of this work was to unravel the main mechanism that generates complex abnormal patterns, referred to as poly spike-waves, seen in brain electrical activity during a seizure. The model explains why different subjects with the same pathology (absence seizure) have markedly different poly spike-waves, suggesting that there are different subclasses of absence seizure. This paper led to a research partnership with Enrique Ponce (Seville University, Spain) via an “IMUS" grant of €12K (2011-2012), followed by a Proof of Concept grant of £10K (2012-2013) given by the Frontier IP group via Plymouth University.
