Additional information
This paper reports on a comprehensive experimental study in which turbulent flow behind an obstacle on a rough bed was measured and analysed in detail. The implications for grain entrainment and pollutant and nutrient transfer into river beds are carefully discussed. The paper also reports on the development of an analytical model to describe the complex nature of the near bed flow around an obstacle in a computationally efficient manner. The concept of the experiments and the analysis methodology was developed when Professor Dey was on sabbatical leave in Professor Tait’s laboratory funded by a Royal Society Fellowship.
