Additional information

This is a seminal paper in the field of PDE-based image processing which attracted a lot of interest from the community. It formed the basis or inspired many image denoising and restoration algorithms developed in recent years. The paper is important in that it introduces a new functional setting for the minimization problem that is solved to determine the denoised image. The new theoretical formulation allows handling elegantly the edge-preserving term of the cost function, leading to a well-posed nonlinear diffusion equation that is easy to solve numerically.
