Dr Baumbach is Head of Cardiac Research at University Hospitals Bristol (UHB) and sits on UHB and University research committees. He mentors colleagues in substantive academic posts, co-authors publications with Category A staff in this submission and likewise has successful collaborative research projects at the Bristol Heart Institute, University of Bristol, including an investigator-initiated Astra Zeneca-funded study on platelet function (with Dr Mumford and Professor Mundell).
Dr Baumbach has played a central role in developing academic cardiology in Bristol, including establishing and leading the cardiology theme of the NIHR Biomedical Research Unit in Cardiovascular Disease. These successes are in large part attributable to his efforts, within a full-time clinical position with 8 hours per week in his job plan to develop academic cardiology. Initially, his research involved recruitment of patients to large multi-centre RCTs. More recently, he has translated innovative ideas into clinical research programmes through several successful collaborations with University of Bristol staff, including Professor Paton to develop renal artery denervation for hypertension and Professor Madeddu evaluating transcatheter stem cell treatments post myocardial infarction.
