A NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF MOMENT COEFFICIENT AND FLOW STRUCTURE IN A ROTOR-STATOR CAVITY WITH ROTOR MOUNTED BOLTS
This computational study (3-D, CFD) provided valuable insight into fluid flow behaviour, not possible experimentally due to physical instrumentation limitations.
A particularly challenging problem for CFD models, as features of separation and turbulence must be accurately modelled.
Main outcomes:
i) ability of CFD model to determine relative contributions of viscous and pressure losses, used to explain experimental data;
ii) for a large bolt numbers, the moment coefficient tends to a constant value, useful to engine designers;
iii) validation of (sometimes considered questionable) previous experimental data for a continuous ring giving similar moment coefficient to a plain disc.
