Experimental investigation of turbine stator well rim seal, reingestion and interstage seal flows using gas concentration techniques and displacement measurements
The study makes use of a unique test facility using a Rolls-Royce Dart powered compressor, a two-stage turbine test section, dynamometer, meticulous instrumentation and a telemetry system. A new technique was developed using measurements of CO2 tracer gas, between the two turbine stages, to quantify the various secondary flows, their interaction with mainstream air and with each other. High quality measurements were made at engine-representative conditions. These have provided valuable insight into flow behaviour and used extensively by Rolls-Royce and other partners in CFD code validation and applied to the design of new Trent series engines.
