This paper is the outcome of a NERC FREE research programme. The research has stimulated contributions from scholars at the University of Maine in USA, Hohai University in China, Swansea University and the National Oceanography Centre, with joint journal publications. The research is also a contributor to a subsequent EU-FP7 research project (THESEUS €6.53M) in collaboration with 32 international partner institutes. The research has led to new collaborations with the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan and Hohai University in China with fully funded visits, joint workshops and publications. The research enabled involvement in a Belmont Forum proposal.
