This paper is the result of a bilateral collaboration sponsored by the Research Council of Norway. The research investigated the reliability of a large-scale model to predict the effect of small-scale turbulence on the mean flow in rivers and streams. Evidence is provided that for a complex flow, like the one in a meandering channel, a less sophisticated approach is able to return reasonably accurate predictions of the mean flow. This is an important finding for practical hydraulic engineers, who rely on large-scale model predictions.
