Additional information

This paper explores the factors influencing measurements of matric suction of unsaturated soils using the commonly used axis-translation technique, in particular emphasises the limitation of measuring systems in establishing continuity in the water phase, which is a mandatory requirement for correct measurement of matric suction. It provides experimental solutions for re-establishing water phase continuity during tests which are extremely beneficial for studying the water retention behaviour of soils. This paper led to Tripathy being invited to deliver lectures at the International Bauhaus Summer School, Bauhaus-University Weimar (in Germany), at Tongji University (Shanghai, China), and at Durham University, in 2012.
