Crime Prevention, Security and Community Safety Using the 5Is Framework
This book presents a framework and process model developed by Ekblom for capturing, organising, and transferring knowledge based on experience across the entire crime prevention field. ‘5Is’ supports innovation in response to criminals’ constantly evolving modes of operation and encourages practitioners to ‘draw on design’ in generating interventions that are intelligently customised to their context .
Audiences include designers, police, local and central governments, private security agencies, policymakers and academic researchers. The framework accommodates approaches including Theory of Change (McConnell) and Realistic Evaluation (Pawson and Tilley) and subsumes prior schemes, particularly the SARA model (Scanning, Analysis, Response and Assessment) from the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing. The framework supports design, accommodating systematic requirements capture and detailed specification. This is based on practical experience with design against crime. The terms in the framework are designed to support communication and consistency across a range of stakeholders working to prevent crime.
