The output describes the largest ever hospital-based trial in severe malaria, involving 5,425 children at 11 sites in nine countries in Africa. Its size and scale led to definitive and global changes in WHO guidelines affecting millions of children. Professor White was the senior author of this study. He chaired the coordinating committee, worked with international partners and was responsible for establishing the ethical framework and funding for this major study, as well as being a member of the writing committee, which did the data analysis and prepared the report.
