Critical Reynolds number and galloping instabilities: Experiments on circular cylinders
The paper presents a series of large scale wind tunnel tests (co-funded by EPSRC: EP/D073944/1) that were devised to expand the knowledge acquired during a first phase of similar tests that were proposed and funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in US in order to treat severe vibration phenomena on long-span bridges. Major companies (e.g. RWDI) and a number of collaborators all over the world (Japan, USA, Canada, UK) were involved in the project. Research outcomes are of substantial application value and are to influence and rationalise the next generation of design guidelines for cables in cable-stayed bridges.
