<02> Originality: This work introduces a new processor organization for data-intensive online services that run in the cloud.

Significance: Processing is rapidly moving to the cloud. This work proposes a new processor organization that maximizes efficiency for datacenter operators. The proposed design calls for (i) many simple cores on-chip, and (ii) partitioning of on-chip resources into "islands", each of which runs a full software stack and acts as an independent server-on-chip. These features maximize the benefits of integration while overcoming scalability bottlenecks (e.g., coherence, OS) of many-core chips.

Rigour: Domain workload characterization, analytical performance model, simulation-based studies, power analysis.
