Additional information

<01> Originality: While the solution of the corresponding one-dimensional problem has been known for more than 30 years, here the biologically relevant two-dimensional case for the activity dynamics in a continuous neural layer was solved by a combination of methods from non-linear dynamics and computational neuroscience.

Significance: A classification of stable states in the system was presented that covers the numerically observed patterns. The solution provides limits for applications of neural fields in large-scale models of the brain, robotics and image processing.

Rigour: An exactly solvable model in computational neuroscience and non-linear dynamics, fields largely dominated by simulation studies.
