Archaic Style in English Literature, 1590-1674
This monograph is based on a decade’s research in major collections in the UK and North America. It brings together an exceptionally wide range of primary texts, including classical literature, medieval literature, and pivotal early modern writers such as Shakespeare, Spenser, Jonson and Milton. Simultaneously, it explores the work of figures whose work is less easily accessible, including religious dissidents, women writers and translators. Extensive work on primary sources is complemented by multidisciplinary research in literary studies, linguistics and history. The book’s complex thesis and range of insights would have been impossible to reproduce with a smaller body of material.
