American Experimental Poetry and Democratic Thought
The book analyses in detail an extensive body of material: the work of ten American poets (from Whitman and Dickinson in the nineteenth century to Creeley, Niedecker and O’Hara in the twentieth), in addition to a diverse range of theoretical materials (e.g. Madison, Kant, Tocqueville, Marx, Freud, Winnicott, Riesman, Heidegger, Arendt and Benhabib)—all of which are addressed directly and in detail. It aimed to develop a complex and ambitious narrative argument about poetry, politics and communicative action, which was simultaneously cognizant of and receptive to the large and growing body of secondary literature on the individual poets studied.
