Kritik der Tradition. Bildlichkeit und Vorbildlichkeit in den deutschen Predigten Marquards von Lindau und die Umdeutung der mater dolorosa
This article examines the relationship between iconography and preaching, between literal models and models of behaviour. It considers the latitude that a late medieval preacher could have to challenge not just dominant interpretations, but conventional iconographies. The German sermons of the fourteenth-century Franciscan Marquard von Lindau are offered as a case-study, with specific focus on their negotiation of the mater dolorosa. Marquard’s critique of the lachrymose presentation of Mary under the Cross is initially examined through the lens of his engagement with his direct sources. It is then located within a wider temporal context of like-minded criticism, and the particular reasons underlying Marquard’s critique are elaborated.
