Additional information

Invited to write a chapter for this major study of postcommunist film, Gray’s essay examines solidarity in filmmaking between lusophone African countries, the Soviet Union and other socialist countries, drawing on her research in Mozambique involving interviews with filmmakers, archival work, and locating films thought to be lost or unavailable. It analyses works by filmmakers including Abderrahmane Sissako and Licínio Azevedo to theorise the affective legacy of these ‘uneven relational geographies’. The essay is conceptually innovative in developing the theoretical implications of socialist friendship, drawing on Lela Gandhi’s notion of ‘affective communities’ to analyse emotional ties surplus to ideological identification.
