English abstract

In this book, I try to show how the philosophical problem of otherness informs deconstruction, and how the thought of Jacques Derrida appears as a coherent treatment of this problem. A lengthy introductory chapter investigates the two approaches to otherness that can be found in deconstruction: otherness conceived of as deferral and difference, and otherness conceived of as that against which something must measure itself in order to come into one’s own. I demonstrate that both approaches are dependent upon each other and should not be seen as incompatible or simply diverging. The first chapter is followed by four studies devoted to specific aspects of deconstruction.
