<22> Published in one of the top journals on control engineering, this paper has initiated a new research branch in networked systems research by defining, with clear engineering justification, a new research problem of extended Kalman filtering problem with random packet losses and stochastic nonlinearities. This new problem addressed has quickly attracted research attention from the stochastic control community. In particular, the way of obtaining the recursive form of the filtering error covariance in Theorem 2 has been frequently employed in a number of journal papers in just one year since the publication of this paper.
