This novel way of simulating scanning probe microscopy images using HMM's, is proving to be useful in the interpretation of real images - both biological and nano-technological. This approach has been used for simulating the performance of ion conductance microscopy by the Klenerman group in the Chemistry Department in Cambridge (http://www.klenermangroup.co.uk, Prof. Klenerman's email: ID_in_audit_file@cam.ac.uk).
