Additional information

The novel approach to optimising modular compression systems described in this paper was instrumental in the 2010 award of a GBP353k project jointly funded by Rolls-Royce plc and the UK Technology Strategy Board under the SILOET programme (RG58684 and RG58685). The project leader in Rolls-Royce was Dr Simon Gallimore (ID_in_audit_file@rolls-royce.com). It contributed to the second author's successful application for a Junior Research Fellowship at Darwin College, Cambridge. An industrial reviewer considered that "the paper has solid engineering relevance and I would encourage my design colleagues to read the paper and consider our work in light of its general conclusions".
