<22>This paper, accepted at the selective ISWC research track (19% acceptance rate) builds on an empirical study, which highlighted issues with the effectiveness of tool support for navigating and visualising ontologies. This issue is addressed through an innovative interface, which provides greater flexibility in generating ontology views and moves away from purely graphical techniques to use instead novel knowledge-based techniques. A rigorous empirical study confirmed the advantage of this approach over other solutions. The approach is implemented in a tool, KC-Viz, which provides the main graphical interface of the NeOn Toolkit, one of the main ontology engineering environments available today.
