English abstract

The book examines the complex history of the Palazzo Mancini. Conceived by Cardinal Jules Mazarin in 1660, the palace was built in the latter part of the seventeenth century. Consequently, it makes an exemplary case study of construction practices and building techniques of the period. Its history embodies the social and political relations between the French and Roman courts; not least because the Palazzo Mancini housed the seat of the French Academy of Rome for most of the eighteenth century. Overall, the book covers the entire history of the palace, from its early designs to its many transformations.
