Based on a paper given at Deutsche Sprachwissenschaft in Italien (German linguistics in Italy) at La Sapienza, Rome (2010), the contribution investigates the compositionality of es-clefts. A number of notions are introduced: strict and loose as well as projective and construction-induced compositionality. A suggestion for the unclear grammatical structure of es-clefts is made, and on the basis of this two answers are given to the question of compositionality, depending on the (non)acceptance of a contrastive stress accent.
