The Nobility and Ecclesiastical Patronage in Thirteenth-Century England
The subject of this monograph required systematic scrutiny of a large volume and variety of medieval manuscripts in five UK archives. Most of the documents studied, including deeds, bishops’ registers, inquisitions, ministers’ accounts, and letters, were written in medieval Latin; the remainder were in Anglo-Norman French. Many were in a poor condition. The evidence was analysed to produce an integrated study of magnate patronage of both parish churches and religious houses, in which each chapter addresses a distinct aspect of the system and its significance. There is a lengthy appendix detailing the individual presentations of magnates to benefices.
