This book provides a detailed analytical overview of political and governmental developments across the whole of Europe between 1300 and 1500 (though it also contains a 45,000-word chapter on the 13th-century background). The majority of the research involved reading books and articles, mostly in English and French, but some in Italian, Spanish and German. The indicative bibliography in the book runs to 26 pages and mentions more than 500 items; the actual number of items consulted must be 2-3 times that. Part-time research for the book began in 1999 and full-time research, including 6 terms of leave, ran from 2003-2008.’
